Behind the Credo: our piece in The Times
“This year, as Lent and Ramadan occur almost simultaneously, sacred observances from Christians and Muslims also coincide with one of the most turbulent and desperate moments in Iran’s recent history.”
The above words form part of the opening lines of an opinion piece in The Times Credo column, Saturday 7th March when “a different religious thinker publishes an essay on a timely topic.” In this article I offer a perspective shaped by SAT-7’s long engagement with the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in Iran.

At a time when headlines are dominated by conflict, fear and division, there remain other stories, histories and perspectives that deserve to be heard. Stories of faith, resilience, shared humanity, and the quiet acts of peace-building that rarely make the news. You can read the full article on The Times website or app (you may have a few free reads available, and they often offer introductory subscriptions for £1 three months).
relfect & discuss
“The peacemakers are in the vast majority.”
Below are some questions you can use for personal reflection, home-group conversation or discussion with friends at a good local:
- What stood out or surprised you? What did you learn that you hadn’t considered before?
- Do you have your own personal story of knowing or working with someone from a different faith background?
- The article talks about whether diverse communities can “model a deeper unity rooted in a shared humanity”. What learning can we take from this into our own contexts, especially in the UK?
- How do you think Jesus’ washing of his disciples feet was a sign of humility and resistance?
- If peace-making “is active and, at times costly” or “often begins with the everyday”, what will you do today to be a sign of peace in your workplace or community where you live?
“Peace-making often begins with the everyday, humble acts of hospitality and the willingness to welcome one another, even when circumstances are fragile.”
