Aim for a bright future
SAT-7 TÜRK’s brand-new Careers programme inspires teenagers to aim for a bright future. At a challenging time for Turkey, the show is helping viewers to thrive, not only in their spiritual lives but also in the workplace.
Unemployment in Turkey has risen by 1.6 per cent in the past year, marking a seven-year high. Turkey is also home to three million refugees. The UN has praised the country’s efforts to host refugees and help them integrate into society. However, this endeavour throws up practical challenges, particularly in the workforce. With more people willing to work for less money, lower job availability is ultimately increasing unemployment. Many young people in Turkey, on the brink of finishing education and beginning their careers, are wondering what options are open to them. Careers supports them by preparing them for what to expect from working life.
Inspiring the young viewers is presenter Mehmet Ahif Kum, a well-known businessman. “Christians should not only be successful in their walks of faith, but also in their careers,” he says. Kum has vast business experience as a member of the UN’s Chamber of Commerce, author of two books on personal development and management, and a columnist for Bloomberg magazine. After becoming aware of SAT-7 TÜRK, Kum pitched the idea of the program to the production team. “The channel has not approached working life from this angle before,” he says. “With my background and experience, I want to encourage youth and prepare them for what to expect at the beginning of their careers.”
Twenty episodes have been planned, but it has been a challenge to find successful Turkish Christians willing to speak openly on television. Nevertheless, production has been in full swing since early May. Kum recently filmed an episode with Nükhet Everi, a professional in the tourism industry who enjoys educating both locals and tourists about Christian sites in Turkey. “Featuring a variety of successful guests inspires our young audience to dream big, and to stand firm in their faith while pursuing their careers,” says Programming Manager, Cuneyt Arıkan. “God will provide the right guests to speak into our viewers’ lives.”
Pray
- Pray for young people in Turkey who are feeling demoralised at not being able to find work. Ask that the stories of successful Christians would inspire young people to “dream big and stand firm in their faith”.
- Give thanks for the initiative of Mehmut Ahif Khan to use his experience to inspire others. Please continue to pray for the recruitment of gifted Christian presenters and staff for SAT-7 TÜRK.
- Ask that more successful Christian business people would be willing to share their stories on SAT-7. Give thanks that SAT-7 TURK is able to provide such a positive witness for Christianity in Turkey.
- Pray for Turkey as a whole as its infrastructure struggles to meet the needs of large numbers of refugees.
SAT-7 to launch educational channel for refugees
A new satellite television channel, SAT-7 ACADEMY is set to launch on 1 September. Broadcasting around the clock in Arabic, the channel will offer millions of displaced or refugee children complementary learning opportunities through a variety of television programmes. War has forced thirteen million children out of school across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).[1] Schools that have not […]
A world changer aged 12
There are only a few people that have the “it” factor. “It” being a characteristic that destines one for great things; sometimes as big as changing the world! To me, 12-year old Mahala* is one of those people. I first saw Mahala confidently marching to the podium of my church in Beirut. With perfect poise, she gave a 10-minute sermon […]
Feeding the energy of youth
Youthful energy, enquiry and potential. These aren’t characteristics that immediately spring to mind when we think of the Arab world. But in a region where one third of the population is aged 15-29 and another is under 15, they reflect the dynamic potential of these countries, if only obstacles like conflict, weak political participation, scant job opportunities, and discrimination didn’t […]
Saving the next generation from the perils of self-harm
A growing problem in Iran Self-harm or khoonbazi, literally translated as “blood-game”, is a growing problem among teenagers in Iran. An eye-opening episode of the SAT-7 Persian language talk show Insiders recently examined this devastating issue, offering solutions and hope. The programme revealed that an increasing number of young people are turning to self-harm as they try to deal with […]
BRIDGING THE EDUCATION GAP
Once a world leader in medicine, mathematics and science, the Arabic-speaking world today struggles to meet the education, health and societal needs of its citizens. Brutal conflicts have left millions out of school and have increased pressure on host countries that are running shift systems for local and refugee children. But the “education gaps” in the region aren’t only the […]
Morocco: the cry for wisdom from a generation under pressure
Young and hopeless Population: 31 million; 99% Sunni Muslim; <1% Jewish; <1% Christian Literacy: 82% men; 62% women With a median age of 29, Morocco has a young population. But like youths in neighbouring North African countries, their horizons are limited. Some 22 per cent of young men and 38 per cent of young women are unemployed (Al-Monitor, June 2013). […]
North African youth: struggle and opportunity
For decades North Africa’s young people have pushed against social, economic and religious restrictions. A Moroccan Christian shares their struggles and the new paths some are finding as they turn to Christ. Ever since they shook off European rule or “mandates” between 1951 and 1962, the five countries forming Northwest Africa (known collectively as the “Maghreb”) have not served their […]
Is Valentine’s Day celebrated in the Middle East?
As western flower sellers, restaurants and chocolatiers prepare for a Valentine’s Day bonanza, how do couples in the Middle East mark the day – or do they? In Saudi Arabia, it is the religious police who swoop on chocolatiers and flower sellers, zealous to enforce a ban on the celebration as a western import that incites immorality. In Iran, the […]
Prophetic, practical peace-making in Syria and Iraq
The Church of England’s only Syrian-born clergyman, Dr Nadim Nassar, is also Director of the London-based Awareness Foundation, a charity that provides peace-making education in Syria and Iraq and builds understanding between faiths in the UK. SAT-7 UK’s Press and Communications Officer, Lindsay Shaw, spoke to him just after he returned from Beirut where, among other things, he had filmed […]
