Two nominations and “Special Mention” for SAT-7 children’s show at international TV awards

A SAT-7 KIDS series was one of only two programmes to receive a “Special Mention” and was nominated in two categories at the Prix Jeunesse International 2022 children’s television awards in Munich last week.
A Story in the Attic, produced by SAT-7’s Lebanon studio, was nominated both in the Fiction for Ages 11-15 category and for the Gender Equity Prize. Although the series didn’t collect either of these awards, SAT-7 KIDS Channel Manager, Andrea El Mounayer, said, “To receive a Special Mention at the world’s largest children’s TV festival alongside entrants from many national broadcasters was a great honour.”
“A Story in the Attic isn’t only a fictional storytelling programme, but it was also based on true stories of people who crossed our lives and left a mark,” Andrea explained. “We were so grateful for the opportunity to voice the needs of the new generation and to work together to make this world a better place for them.”

In A Story in the Attic characters in a forgotten attic painting come to life and tell stories that enable older children and adults to learn and consider children’s and wider human rights. Child labour, creation care, perspectives on violence, and trusting God are some of the topics covered. An episode on “Early Marriage” was singled out for notice by the Prix Jeunesse jury, who highlighted this as an important topic for young viewers to be aware of.
Explaining their “Special Mention”, judges said, “A Story in the Attic bravely places women at the centre, giving them space to discuss and reflect on Lebanese cultural values. Honouring the tradition of storytelling, characters tell their points of view, encouraging both the telling of personal narratives but also listening in mutually respectful ways.”
Second programme honoured
Nor was A Story in the Attic the only SAT-7 programme to receive the judges’ praise. SAT-7 disability inclusion programme City of Stars was honourably featured in the festival’s catalogue under “Quality in Children’s TV Worldwide.
SAT-7 UK Executive Director Rachel Fadipe said, “The recognition by Prix Jeunesse is a sign of the wonderful impact SAT-7’s children’s programmes are having on the lives of children across the Middle East and North Africa, whether they are strengthening faith or equipping them in practical ways. It is also a tribute to the creativity and commitment of our SAT-7 KIDS team that has enabled them to be featured among the world’s biggest youth television producers.”
